Information About Gift Cards
Everything you need to know before you buy or send a gift card.
What is a Gift Card?
Gift cards are prepaid cards or digital codes that store a monetary value which can be redeemed at a store, group of stores, or online. They are a convenient way to give a flexible gift without choosing a specific product.
Types of gift cards
- Retail gift cards: Useable only at the issuing retailer.
- Open-loop or network cards: Branded by Visa/Mastercard/other networks — usable wherever the network is accepted.
- Digital / e‑gift cards: Delivered by email or SMS with a code to redeem online.
Common terms
- Balance: The remaining money available on the card.
- PIN / Security code: Optional code to protect use.
- Expiry: Many cards in some regions may have expiry dates — check local rules.
How to check Gift Card balance
You can usually check a gift card balance in three ways:
- Use the issuer's balance checker: Many retailers provide an online balance checker or phone number. Enter your card number and security code to get the current available balance.
- Contact customer support: Call or email the issuing company and provide card details. Keep proof of purchase handy.
- In-store inquiry: Visit a store location and ask staff to check the card at the till.
Tip: Always use secure sites (https) and official brand pages when entering card details. Our Balance Checker page simulates this flow; connect it to your provider for real checks.
Scams going around Gift Cards
Scammers often exploit gift cards because they're like cash — once the value is taken, it's very hard to reverse. Common scams include:
- Payment request scams: Fraudsters demand payment via gift card (asking for the card number and PIN) and promise to unlock services or stop fake legal actions. Legitimate companies never ask you to pay with gift cards.
- Phishing and fake balance checkers: Fake websites mimic real retailers to steal card numbers. Always check the URL and use trusted domains.
- Resale scams: Buying discounted gift cards from strangers — the card may be already drained.
- Tech support scams: Fake support asks you to buy gift cards to pay fees or unlock computers.
How to protect yourself
- Never share full card numbers, PINs, or photos of a card with unknown callers or emails.
- Only check balances on the issuer's official website or phone number.
- Keep receipts and proof of purchase until the card is fully used.
- Don't buy gift cards from third‑party sellers you don't trust.
- If you suspect fraud, contact the card issuer immediately and report it to local authorities.
